|Indian Tri Colour Hoisted By ONG BV At Sudan’s Heglig Base Camp, Heglig Base|
19 May, 2003
Asset Manager Mr. Sushil Kumar Sinha hoisted the Indian Tri-colour on May 18, 2003 at the Base Camp of Greater Nile Petroleum Operating Company (GNPOC) at Heglig in Sudan. The entire staff of ONGC Nile Ganga BV (ONG BV, a 25% partner in GNPOC and a subsidiary of OVL, registered in Amsterdam), Indian expatriates working for various contractors of GNPOC, and representatives from partner companies attended the function.
Even though the deal of partnership sale from Talisman to ONG BV was closed on March 12 this year, May 18 was the last day of transition in Heglig. The Indian flag replaced the Canadian one to mark the completed transition. The function was followed by the Indian national anthem.
Festivities at Heglig Base Camp, Sudan
On the eve of the flag hoisting, a grand party was arranged on by the GNPOC partners to bid farewell to Talisman and welcome ONG BV. The party was followed by a musical gala by Balimbo, the troupe from Khartoum.
The GNPOC is a company of 4 partners - CNPC of China, Petronas of Malaysia, ONG BV of India and Sudapet of Sudan, with 40%, 30%, 25% and 5% share respectively. The oil is being produced from 8 oil fields – Heglig, Unity, Khairat NE, EL Nar, EL Toor, Tome S, Bamboo and Munga, and is collected at Heglig CPF and sent to Port Sudan by pipeline. Presently, the oil production rate is about 260,000 barrels / day (13 MMT per annum), almost at par with Mumbai high. The Asset office is at Heglig, and the Asset Manager is from ONG BV and CNPC by rotation every 28 days.
THE HEGLIG TEAM
Presently, 10 executives of ONG BV have already taken over from Talisman in a smooth transition of key positions, and a couple more are expected to join shortly. Some of the executives who are already in Sudan include I/C Production Engineering, Mr. E F Osta, I/C Maintenance, Mr. G. Natarajan (DGM – Mech), and W/O Engineer, Mr. T C Gupta (DGM - Prodn), besides, of course, the Asset Manager and Production Field Manager, Mr. Sushil Kumar Sinha.
THE GNPOC EXPERIENCE
The OVL Team at Heglig Base Camp, Sudan
All 10 ONG BV executives have joined Heglig, GNPOC during last 4 weeks and are finding the new assignment very interesting; particularly the shift personnel who are from different nationalities and cultures. Most of the operations and communication of GNPOC is via E–mail and Excel Spreadsheets. And of course, as far as the work is concerned, ONG BV executives are second to none – in fact, all it took was a couple of days of orientation on extensive usage of E-mail and spreadsheet for them to get off the block and take charge of the operations.
